Christmas is the one predictable moment in the Dixy Chicken year. UK Google Trends data shows interest in the brand climbing hard in the days before 25 December, peaking in Christmas week, then falling to its lowest point of the year by mid-January. It has done the same thing five years running.
Which is awkward, because that is the week when opening hours are least reliable. Here is what to expect, why it differs from shop to shop, and how to check before you travel.
The Christmas spike is real, and it is consistent
On Google’s relative index for UK web searches, where 100 is the five-year high, the peak week lands in the same place every year: 100 in the week of 26 December 2021, 84 for 25 December 2022, 97 for 24 December 2023, 90 for 22 December 2024 and 79 for 21 December 2025. Every one of those was the highest reading of its year, or near enough.
The drop afterwards is just as sharp. By mid to late January the index sits in the mid-40s to low-50s, roughly 40 to 50 per cent below the Christmas peak. Call it new year budgeting, dry January or plain fatigue, but the pattern is always there.
In that peak week, people are not looking up the menu. They are trying to find out whether their local shop is open.
Is Dixy Chicken open on Christmas Day?
There is no single answer, because there is no central policy. Almost every UK branch is franchised, so the owner decides whether to open on 25 December and what hours to keep for the rest of the festive period.
Across UK takeaways generally, most independents close on Christmas Day, plenty stay shut on Boxing Day, and many cut hours between Christmas and New Year before going back to normal in the first full week of January. Shops in busy city-centre and student areas often do the opposite and trade right through, because demand is huge when everything else is shut. Both happen often enough that guessing is a bad idea.
New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day
New Year’s Eve is a big late-night trading night for chicken shops, and plenty of branches stay open well past their usual closing time. New Year’s Day is far more mixed, and a later opening is the most common change. Again, a tendency rather than a rule.
Bank holidays through the rest of the year
Outside Christmas, bank holidays barely register. Most branches treat Good Friday, Easter Monday, the early May bank holiday, the spring one and the late summer one as ordinary days, sometimes opening a bit later. Demand goes up on bank holiday weekends, so expect a longer wait rather than a locked door.
Ramadan is the other period to plan around at halal takeaways. Some branches open later and get slammed after sunset, and Eid can mean either closing up or staying open late, depending on the owner. If your local shop adjusts for Ramadan, its social media page is usually where that gets announced first.
How to check your branch, in order of reliability
Start with a phone call to the branch itself. Old-fashioned, but for an independently owned takeaway it is the only source that actually knows, and it takes thirty seconds. Use the number on that shop’s Google Maps listing rather than any central number.
Second, check the branch’s Facebook or Instagram page. Independent takeaways post festive hours there far more often than they update directory listings.
Third, look for special hours on Google Maps. Google nudges businesses to confirm holiday hours in December, and where the owner has done it the listing shows the specific date rather than the usual weekly pattern. If it has not been updated, do not trust it.

A few practical tips for the festive week
Order earlier than you think you need to. The days around Christmas bring the heaviest demand of the year, at exactly the point when shops are short-staffed, so delivery estimates stretch.
