Does Dixy Chicken Use Pigeon? The Rumour, Checked

This is an independent guide. Dixy Chicken Info is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to Dixy Chicken or Dixy Group Holdings Limited.

Does Dixy Chicken use pigeon? No. We found no evidence that Dixy Chicken, or any UK chicken shop, has ever been caught selling pigeon. No food hygiene report, court case, council press release or news story says so. The rumour lives almost entirely on TikTok and in jokes, and when you look at the size of a pigeon, what it costs and the rules every takeaway has to follow, it does not hold up.

People still search for it a lot. Type “does Dixy Chicken” into Google and “use pigeon” is one of the first suggestions, with “dixy chicken pigeon meat” close behind. We looked into where the story started and checked it against the facts.

Where the pigeon rumour comes from

The joke is aimed at British chicken shops in general. Dixy gets pulled in because it is one of the best-known names, and “Dixy Pigeon” is an easy pun.

Part of it is just what you see on the street. Anyone who has walked past a chicken shop after midnight has seen pigeons picking at dropped chips and bones on the pavement, and from there it is a short step to joking about what is in the fryer.

TikTok has kept it alive. There are plenty of UK videos about chicken shops serving pigeon, mostly played for laughs, and a few that present it as a serious warning and claim shops pass pigeon off as wings. None of the ones we looked at named a shop, showed a test result or pointed to an inspection.

Then there are old reviews with jokey titles. A 2015 Tripadvisor review of a Dixy in Bury is headed “More like Dixy Pigeon”. Read the review itself and it doesn’t mention pigeon at all. The reviewer simply didn’t like the food and used the pun as a headline. Reviews like this get picked up by search engines and make the rumour look more established than it is.

Why it doesn’t add up

A pigeon is too small

A whole city pigeon weighs about 240 to 380 grams, feathers and all. A single three-joint chicken wing of the kind takeaways buy from wholesalers weighs about 120 grams. So one entire street pigeon, before it is plucked and cleaned, weighs roughly the same as two or three chicken wings.

And almost none of that pigeon is wing meat. A pigeon’s meat sits on its breast, which powers its flight. The wings themselves are mostly bone, tendon and feather, with very little to eat. Getting even a small box of “wings” out of pigeons would take a whole flock and hours of work, and the result would look nothing like the meaty wings in a Dixy box.

Weight
One whole feral (city) pigeon238 to 380g
One whole wood pigeon300 to 615g
One wholesale 3-joint halal chicken wingabout 120g

Pigeon costs more than chicken

Food fraud happens when someone swaps an expensive meat for a cheaper one. Pigeon is not cheaper. When we checked in October 2026, a whole wild wood pigeon from a UK game butcher cost about £4.75 to £4.95. Halal chicken wings were selling wholesale for around £4.20 to £4.75 per kilo, which works out to roughly 50 to 60p per wing.

Put another way, the price of one wood pigeon buys a takeaway about nine chicken wings. A shop would lose money on every pigeon it used, and saving money is the only reason anyone swaps meat in the first place.

You would notice the taste

Pigeon is dark red meat with a strong, gamey taste closer to liver or venison than to chicken. Restaurants that serve it, usually as “squab” or wood pigeon breast, cook it pink like a steak. Even coated in batter and fried, it would look and taste wrong to anyone expecting chicken.

Takeaways have to show where their meat comes from

UK food law requires every food business to keep traceability records: the name and address of every supplier, what was bought, how much and when. Those records have to be available for inspection at all times. When environmental health officers inspect a takeaway, checking where the food comes from is part of judging how well the business is managed, which feeds into its hygiene rating.

Wild birds can only reach a restaurant through a legal route: either a hunter supplying small amounts locally under Food Standards Agency rules, or an approved game handling establishment. Pigeons caught on the street don’t fit either route. A shop selling them would have no supplier records to show, would be serving meat with no safety checks, and would be risking diseases that city pigeons are known to carry.

What meat testing has actually found

Takeaway meat fraud is real, which is probably why the pigeon story sounds believable. But the cases that have been found point the other way.

In 2014 the Food Standards Agency reviewed council test results and found that 43 out of 145 lamb takeaway samples contained other meat, most often beef. That same year Which? tested 60 lamb curries and kebabs in London and Birmingham and found 24 had been mixed with cheaper meat such as beef and chicken. In those tests, chicken was the cheap meat being used to bulk out more expensive lamb. None of the samples contained pigeon.

Chicken is already one of the cheapest meats in the UK. That is why fried chicken shops can sell a meal for a few pounds, and why there is nothing cheaper to swap it for.

What is in a Dixy wing

Dixy sells itself as a halal chicken brand, and its branches buy halal chicken from poultry suppliers the same way other takeaways do. Our halal guide explains how to check a branch’s certificate, and the calories and nutrition guide breaks down what is in each item.

If a wing you buy ever looks or tastes wrong, you don’t have to rely on rumours. Every Dixy branch has a public food hygiene rating you can look up on the Food Standards Agency website, and our branch finder shows the rating for shops near you. If you have a genuine concern about a shop, you can report it to your local council’s environmental health team, who can inspect it.

Common questions

Does Dixy Chicken use pigeon?

No. We found no inspection report, court case or news story showing that Dixy, or any UK chicken shop, has sold pigeon. The claim comes from jokes and social media videos.

Why do people say chicken shops use pigeon?

Mostly as a joke. Pigeons are a common sight outside chicken shops, and comedy skits on TikTok have turned that into a running gag. It also borrows from real takeaway meat fraud cases, though those involved swapping lamb for cheaper meats such as beef or chicken.

Could pigeon pass as chicken wings?

Not really. A whole city pigeon weighs about the same as two or three chicken wings, its wings have almost no meat, and pigeon is dark red with a gamey taste.

Is pigeon cheaper than chicken?

No. A whole wood pigeon costs around £4.75 to £4.95 from a game butcher, about the same as a kilo of wholesale halal chicken wings.

How can I check a Dixy branch is safe?

Look up its food hygiene rating on the Food Standards Agency website or use our branch finder. Ratings run from 0 to 5, and you can report concerns to the local council.
