It is surprising that Newcastle comes up time and time again in Dixy Chicken search data alongside Manchester and London, and even more interesting that it draws so much interest in the brand when people think of Dixy as a Midlands brand. The city has four Dixy shops, and six more are located elsewhere in Tyneside, Wearside, Northumberland and Teesside.
Here is a list of all the shops we could find, with their food hygiene ratings plus our research on hours and prices. This is an independent site, not associated with the Dixy Chicken company, and it has no sponsored content.
Every Dixy Chicken in Newcastle
Newcastle City Council has four Dixy shops on the Food Standards Agency (FSA) register, which we checked on 25 September 2026. Click a rating to open the full inspection record.
| Area | Address | Hygiene rating | Last inspected |
|---|---|---|---|
| Elswick, near the city centre | 20 Westmorland Road, Newcastle upon Tyne NE1 4EG | 5 out of 5 | 13 Aug 2026 |
| Heaton | 200 Chillingham Road, Newcastle upon Tyne NE6 5LN | 5 out of 5 | 25 Feb 2026 |
| West Road | 68-70 West Road, Newcastle upon Tyne NE4 9PY | 5 out of 5 | 29 Oct 2024 |
| Benwell | Unit 12, The Adelaide Centre, Adelaide Terrace, Newcastle upon Tyne NE4 8BE | 5 out of 5 | 8 Feb 2025 |
All four Dixy shops hold the top rating of 5. That’s a superior set of ratings to what Dixy has in most big cities, and a long way from the chain’s record ten years ago, when newspapers reported it had the poorest hygiene record of any UK takeaway brand. The West Road inspection is almost two years old now, so it’s due another visit.
Hygiene ratings don’t tell you whether customers like the food or not; for that, you have to try it yourself. Westmorland Road scored 5 for hygiene in August 2026, but it averages 2.5 out of 5 across more than 4,000 Just Eat reviews, the lowest customer score of any Newcastle branch. West Road and Benwell both average 5 out of 5 on the same app.
Elsewhere in the North East
| Town | Address | Hygiene rating | Last inspected |
|---|---|---|---|
| Whitley Bay | 210 Whitley Road, Whitley Bay NE26 2TA | 5 out of 5 | 6 Aug 2025 |
| Wallsend | 82 High Street East, Wallsend NE28 | Not found on the register | n/a |
| Ashington | Woodhorn Road, Ashington NE63 0BA | 5 out of 5 | 16 Jun 2026 |
| Sunderland (Pallion) | 56 St Lukes Terrace, Sunderland SR4 6NF | 5 out of 5 | 19 Nov 2024 |
| Middlesbrough | 294-296 Linthorpe Road, Middlesbrough TS1 3QU | 5 out of 5 | 6 Mar 2025 |
| Stockton-on-Tees | 19 Dovecot Street, Stockton-on-Tees TS18 1LH | 5 out of 5 | 27 Mar 2025 |
Wallsend is the newest. It’s listed on Just Eat’s official Dixy Chicken page with only a limited number of reviews. We couldn’t find it on the FSA register yet, which is normal for a shop that has only just opened. Stockton is the opposite case: it has a current rating but isn’t on Just Eat’s Dixy list, and the most recent Google reviews we found were from mid-2025. Ring ahead before making a special trip to either.
You’ll still see a South Shields branch on Fowler Street and a Sunderland one on Holmeside in some directories. We found no sign that either is still trading, so we’ve left them out. We also found no Dixy in Gateshead, Durham, Hartlepool, Darlington or Blyth.
The register was checked on 25 September 2026. Takeaways open, close and change hands regularly, so confirm a shop is trading before you travel.
Where the Newcastle branches are
Three out of four city shops are in the West End. Westmorland Road is the closest to town, a short walk from Central Station and the Westgate Road end of the centre, and it’s the one most people finish up at after a night out. West Road and the Adelaide Centre in Benwell are further out on the same side of the city and mostly serve the streets around them.
Chillingham Road is the odd one out, over in Heaton on the east side. This is a main student area in a city with more than 55,000 students, so the branch sees a significant amount of term-time trade. For those living in Jesmond or Sandyford, it’s the fastest one to get to.
Opening hours
These are the hours shown on the delivery apps and branch websites in September 2026. Where two sources disagree, we’ve given both.
| Branch | Hours |
|---|---|
| Westmorland Road | 5pm to 5am on Uber Eats (from 4pm on Fridays and Saturdays). The branch’s own website says 5pm to 3am. |
| Chillingham Road | Noon to 12:15am |
| Benwell | 11am to 11pm |
| Sunderland | 11am to 12:15am |
| Middlesbrough | 11am to 2am |
So if it’s past midnight and you’re in Newcastle, Westmorland Road is your only real option. We couldn’t find reliable hours for West Road, Whitley Bay, Wallsend, Ashington or Stockton. For bank holidays, see our guide to Christmas and bank holiday opening hours.
What you will pay
Each Dixy is run by its own franchisee, and the prices show it. Here’s a sample of what North East branches were charging on 25 September 2026.
| Item | Price | Where we saw it |
|---|---|---|
| Value Box Meal | £8.40 to £8.50 | Westmorland Road, Benwell and Chillingham Road (Uber Eats and Just Eat) |
| Combo Box Meal | £9.60 to £9.70 | Same three branches |
| Chicken Fillet Burger Meal | £8.50 to £9.99 | Chillingham Road (£8.50), Middlesbrough (£9.99), Uber Eats |
| Dixy Lunch Box | £9.99 to £12.99 | Westmorland Road website (£9.99), Whitley Bay on Just Eat (£12.99) |
| 5 pieces of chicken | £8.99 | Sunderland, Uber Eats |
| Family bucket (6 pieces) | £14.40 to £16.49 | Westmorland Road website (with 3 fries), Sunderland on Uber Eats |
The same Lunch Box costs £3 more in Whitley Bay than on Westmorland Road, which is a bigger gap than most people plan for within one city. Uber Eats and Just Eat also charge more than the counter to cover their commission, so ordering direct or collecting in person is usually the most affordable way. Our UK menu prices guide has the national ranges, and the order cost calculator will price up a full order for you, so it’s worth a check before you order.
Who runs Dixy in the North East?
You might come across a company called Dixy Chicken (Master North East) Ltd, registered in Fenham in 2004. It was dissolved in 2015, so it no longer runs anything. Today each shop is operated by its own local business under a franchise, which is why prices, menus and customer feedback vary so much between branches only a mile or two from one another.
The local competition
Newcastle has plenty of chicken, from KFC and a long list of independent fried chicken shops to Popeyes, which has a restaurant at the Metrocentre in Gateshead. If you’re choosing between them, have a look at our comparisons of Dixy versus KFC and Dixy versus Chicken Cottage.
For Teesside, our Dixy Chicken Middlesbrough page covers the Linthorpe Road and Stockton branches in more detail, including late-night opening hours and current prices.
Before you go
Most of Newcastle’s Dixy shops are in the West End, so if you’re elsewhere, check a delivery app with your postcode or try our branch finder. Dixy sells itself as a halal chicken brand, but we found no named certifier for any North East shop, so see our halal guide if you want to check one.
Common questions
How many Dixy Chicken shops are there in Newcastle?
Four in the city itself: Westmorland Road, Chillingham Road, West Road and Benwell. Counting Whitley Bay, Wallsend, Ashington, Sunderland, Middlesbrough and Stockton, there are ten across the North East.
Which Newcastle Dixy is open latest?
Westmorland Road, near the city centre. It opens in the late afternoon and trades until at least 3am, and Uber Eats lists it until 5am.
Is there a Dixy Chicken in Gateshead or South Shields?
Not that we could spot. There’s no sign of Gateshead having a Dixy, and the South Shields shop on Fowler Street has no recent reviews or app listings, so we think it’s closed.
