How to verify a specific branch yourself
- Look for the certificate itself. It should name the certifying body, the address of the business and an expiry date. Out of date means not valid.
- Check the certifier’s register. Most of the main bodies put a searchable list of certified premises online. Search by address, not by brand name.
- Ask about the method. Certifiers differ on stunning and on hand versus mechanical slaughter, so if that matters to you, ask at the counter.
- Ask about the fryers. If the shop also sells bacon or other non-halal items, ask whether the oil and the equipment are shared.
- Do not trust delivery apps. The halal tag on Just Eat or Uber Eats is typed in by the shop, and nobody checks it.
