Popeyes is opening chicken shops in Britain faster than any other chain. Since landing in Stratford in November 2021, the Louisiana chain has gone from zero to 120-plus UK restaurants: with long opening-day queues and a chicken sandwich that built most of the hype. Meanwhile Dixy Chicken has been quietly doing the same job since 1986: halal fried chicken on the high street, roughly 110 branches deep.
The two now have a similar number of branches, but they are very different businesses. Popeyes wins on hype, tenders and the Cajun menu you can’t get elsewhere. Dixy wins on burgers, feeding a crowd, and halal transparency. All prices below were checked in October 2026.
Dixy Chicken vs Popeyes: price comparison
Dixy’s franchise pricing varies by branch, so the figures below are ranges; Popeyes is more standardised, but its delivery prices run a pound or two above in-store. All figures are October 2026.
Burgers and sandwiches
| Item | Dixy Chicken | Popeyes |
|---|---|---|
| Chicken fillet burger / sandwich | £3.99 to £6.49 | £6.49 to £7.99 (Classic / Spicy / Deluxe) |
| Chicken burger / sandwich meal | £7.49 to £10.49 | £11.49 to £11.99 (delivery) |
| Double burger | £5.99 to £9.49 | £10.79 (Double Stack, delivery) |
Dixy is clearly cheaper for burgers. Its fillet burger starts at £3.99. Popeyes’ cheapest sandwich starts at £6.49, and the meal gap is wider still. Popeyes’ sandwich is the famous one, the shatter-crunch brioche affair that caused the queues, and fans will tell you it’s worth the premium. On price alone, Dixy is well ahead.
Tenders and wings
| Item | Dixy Chicken | Popeyes |
|---|---|---|
| 3 tenders | ~£3.49 to £4.49 | £2.99 |
| 5 tenders | ~£5.49 to £6.99 | £3.99 (in-store guide) |
| 12 wings | ~£10 to £13 (branch-dependent) | £13.29 to £13.49 (delivery) |
Popeyes is cheaper here: its tenders are cheap: £2.99 for three in-store, and they’re the item the chain is proudest of. This is the one category where the American giant undercuts the high-street shop. Wings are roughly level, with delivery prices narrowing every gap.
Sides
| Item | Dixy Chicken | Popeyes |
|---|---|---|
| Fries (regular) | £1.99 to £2.99 | £1.59 to £3.59 (Cajun fries) |
| Mac & cheese | Not on the menu | £3.99 |
| Mash & Cajun gravy | Not on the menu | £3.50 |
| Buttermilk biscuit | Not on the menu | £1.00 to £2.59 |
Popeyes’ sides are classic Cajun food: biscuits, Cajun gravy and mac & cheese, which no other UK chicken chain sells. Dixy counters with peri peri sides and, at equipped branches, a full pizza menu. See our peri peri guide for Dixy’s grilled side of the story.
Feeding a group
| Item | Dixy Chicken | Popeyes |
|---|---|---|
| Sharing meal for 2 | £13.99 to £21.99 (peri platters) | £25.99 (Sharer: 2 sandwiches, 2 fries, 8 wings) |
| Family / feast for 4+ | £26.99 (family platter) | £60.29 (Full Time Feast for 4) |
This is the biggest gap in the article: feeding four costs £26.99 at Dixy against £60.29 at Popeyes. Popeyes’ feast is a bigger spread, more food, more variety, but it’s more than double the money. For a family meal on a budget, Dixy is the cheaper choice.
Halal status: read the fine print
Both chains serve halal chicken in the UK, but the two setups deserve very different levels of scrutiny.
Dixy is a halal-first brand: every branch serves halal chicken, each shop holds its own HMC or HFA certification, and the certificate is typically displayed at the counter. It’s been the chain’s identity since 1986. Our halal guide explains how the branch-level system works.
Popeyes UK states that all of its chicken is halal, marinated for 12 hours, from halal-certified suppliers. Its Stratford branch is specifically HMC-certified. But the caveats matter: sausage and bacon items on the menu are not halal, pork is served on the premises so cross-contamination is possible, and certificate display varies by branch. Strict observers should ask at the specific branch before ordering. Dixy’s halal credentials are simply more transparent and more verifiable: there’s no pork on the menu to worry about in the first place.
The food: Cajun hype vs high-street reliability
Popeyes’ menu is a Louisiana export: the shatter-crunch chicken sandwich, 12-hour marinated tenders, Cajun fries, buttermilk biscuits, mac & cheese, and a breakfast menu (until 11am at selected sites) that no other chicken chain in Britain offers. The hype is backed by numbers: a loyalty programme with 200,000-plus members, and an app past a million downloads.
Dixy’s menu is broader in a different way: fried chicken, a full peri peri grilled range, pizzas at equipped branches, burgers, wraps, milkshakes and desserts. It covers everything you would expect from a halal chicken shop at high-street prices. Dixy openings don’t draw queues, but the chain has been on British high streets for forty years.
Branches: parity today, different trajectories
Branch numbers are close: roughly 110 Dixy branches against 120-plus Popeyes. Near parity right now. But the trajectories are wildly different. Popeyes went from 64 sites at the end of 2024 to 108 at the end of 2025 to 120-plus today, targeting 150 by the end of 2026, with a stated goal that no UK customer should be more than 30 minutes from one. Six new sites opened in Manchester alone in 2026; the first UK airport branch landed at Birmingham. Dixy’s estate, by contrast, is essentially static.
So Dixy is the established local and Popeyes is the one opening near you next. In London and the big cities, there is usually a Popeyes nearby; outside them, Dixy remains the high-street default. Our near-me guide shows where Dixy actually is.
Delivery changes the maths for both. Popeyes’ delivery prices run about £1 to £2 above in-store on most items, while Dixy’s franchise branches price independently: some barely mark up on the apps, others add several pounds. If you order delivery regularly, compare your specific local branches rather than the national figures.
Verdict: Popeyes or Dixy Chicken?
Choose Popeyes for the tenders, the Cajun menu you can’t get anywhere else, the breakfast, and the novelty, plus the loyalty app if you go often. Choose Dixy for cheaper burgers, for feeding a crowd at half the price, and for halal credentials you can verify on the wall. If halal strictness decides it for you, Dixy. If you want the best chicken sandwich in Britain and don’t mind paying for it, Popeyes. Plenty of people will happily eat at both.

Common questions
Is Popeyes halal in the UK?
Popeyes states all its UK chicken is halal, but pork products are served on the premises and certification varies by branch. Dixy’s halal setup (branch-level HMC/HFA certificates, no pork on the menu) is more transparent.
Is Popeyes more expensive than Dixy Chicken?
On burgers and family meals, yes, significantly. Dixy’s fillet burger starts at £3.99 vs £6.49 at Popeyes, and the family gap is £26.99 vs £60.29. Popeyes wins on tenders, which are cheap.
How many Popeyes are there in the UK?
Over 120 as of late 2026, targeting 150 by year-end, up from 64 at the end of 2024. Dixy has around 110, so the two are near parity on count.
Does Popeyes do breakfast in the UK?
Yes, at selected sites until 11am: muffins, a Big Brekkie Wrap and hash browns. Dixy doesn’t do breakfast.
Which is better for a family meal?
Dixy, on price: £26.99 feeds four against Popeyes’ £60.29 feast. Popeyes offers more variety in its feast, but at more than double the cost.
Does Dixy Chicken deliver?
Yes. Most branches are on Deliveroo, Uber Eats and Just Eat, and many run direct ordering sites that undercut the apps. See our delivery guide.
