This is an independent, unofficial guide. Dixy Chicken Info is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to Dixy Chicken. Menus, coatings and prices vary by branch and change often, so treat this as a guide and check your local menu before you order.
Open a Dixy Chicken menu on Deliveroo or Just Eat and the same choice keeps popping up: Classic or Sizzler. It’s on the fillet burger, the Supreme, the Mega Mix, the panini and even the mini fillet. If you’ve never had either, the menu won’t tell you much beyond a word or two.
The short answer to Dixy Chicken Sizzler vs Classic: Sizzler is Dixy’s spicy coating, and it’s quite hot. Classic Recipe is the original, milder coating that goes on Dixy’s on-the-bone chicken. (If you were looking for the Sizzler steakhouse chain and its Malibu Chicken, this isn’t it. This page is about the two coatings at Dixy Chicken in the UK.)
We went through about 25 UK branch menus in October 2026 to see how each coating is described, what it goes on, and whether it changes the price or the calories. Here’s what we found.

What is Dixy’s Classic Recipe chicken?
Classic Recipe is the coating Dixy built its name on. Branches from Birmingham to Newcastle describe it as their “secret classic recipe”, and Just Eat’s Dixy brand page points new customers to Classic Recipe Chicken first. Dixy has sold halal fried chicken in the UK since 1986, and this is the chicken most people picture when they think of the brand.
It’s seasoned and savoury with a crisp crust, but there’s no real heat in it. Children usually eat it without complaint, and it’s the safe pick if you don’t do spice at all.
You’ll find Classic Recipe on:
- on-the-bone chicken pieces, sold singly, in Value Boxes and in family buckets
- the chicken pieces in a Combo Box
- Classic fillet burgers, Supremes, Mega Mix and Double Deckers
- Chicken Bites at many branches, including Eccles, Alfreton Road in Nottingham and Rusholme in Manchester
What is Dixy’s Sizzler chicken?
Sizzler is the spicy one. Menus call it “our spicy sizzler coating”, and some shops, such as Selly Oak in Birmingham, put “(spicy)” next to the Sizzler Box in case anyone missed it. It’s quite hot. You’ll feel it, and it isn’t what we’d hand to a young child, though it’s not in the same league as the hottest peri peri sauces.
A few Manchester branches (135 Oxford Road, Wilbraham Road and Longsight) explain how they make their Sizzler wings. The wings sit in a spicy marinade for 24 hours and then go into a spicy crispy breading, so the heat is in the meat as well as the crust. Most other branches don’t describe their method, so take this as how some shops do it rather than a confirmed recipe for every Dixy.
Wings are where Sizzler really lives. At most branches “Sizzler wings” and “spicy wings” are the same thing, and you’ll see both names used in box meals and buckets. Sizzler also turns up on:
- Sizzler fillet burgers and Sizzler Supremes
- the Mexican Burger and Mexican Loaded Box, which always use a Sizzler fillet
- the Sizzler Loaded Box (a Sizzler burger with three spicy wings)
- chicken strips at a lot of branches
Which menu items come in which coating?
This part gets a bit messy. Dixy shops are franchises, and their menus don’t all match. Based on the branch menus we checked, it breaks down like this.
Classic only
On-the-bone chicken pieces and the Value Box. We didn’t find a single branch selling Sizzler chicken on the bone.
Sizzler only
Wings in all their forms: Sizzler Wings, the Sizzler Box, 30-wing deals and the Sizzler Wing Bucket at Stokes Croft in Bristol. The Mexican Burger and Sizzler Loaded Box are Sizzler too. Even the BBQ wings at Handsworth are Sizzler wings tossed in BBQ sauce.
Your choice
Most chicken burgers let you pick: the Chicken Fillet Burger, the Supreme (with cheese and a hash brown), the Mega Mix (with two strips on top), the Double Decker, the Mini Fillet and the Panini. Choose it in the app or ask at the counter.
Depends on the branch
Strips and bites. Rusholme and Stokes Croft list their strips in Sizzler coating, while Alfreton Road calls its strips ‘mild spicy’ without naming either coating. Bites are Classic at Eccles, Alfreton Road and Rusholme, but Sizzler at Wilbraham Road, where the strips use the 24-hour marinade with an ‘original’ breading instead. If it matters to you, read the item description on your branch’s delivery page before you order.
The Combo Box mixes both: Classic pieces, two Sizzler wings and a strip. It’s the easiest way to try them side by side.
Does Sizzler cost more than Classic?
Usually not. Where a burger comes in both coatings, branches almost always charge the same for either, and many sell it as a single item where you simply pick the coating.
Prices change far more from one branch to the next than from one coating to the other. If you’re watching the budget, compare shops, not coatings. Our price calculator can help you total up an order, and the meal deals guide lists the boxes that bundle both.
Calories: Classic vs Sizzler
Branch menus that show calories give the same figure for both coatings. A fillet burger on its own is listed at 565 kcal at branches such as Alfreton and Cheetham Hill, whichever coating you choose, so pick on taste, not calories.
| Item | Approx. kcal |
|---|---|
| Fillet burger (Classic or Sizzler) | 565 |
| 1 piece of Classic Recipe chicken | 670 (varies by cut) |
| 1 Sizzler wing | about 120 to 180 |
| 1 chicken strip | about 110 |
| Regular chicken bites | 178 |
| Regular fries | 270 |
These come from branch listings on Deliveroo, including the bucket breakdowns at Kingstanding and Cheetham Hill. Listings do not always agree with each other, so treat them as rough. Our calories and nutrition breakdown and calorie calculator go into more detail.
If you have a food allergy, don’t assume the two coatings share the same ingredients. Check our allergen guide and ask the branch directly.
Which one should you order?
- On a first visit, get a Combo Box. You get Classic pieces and Sizzler wings in one order and can decide for next time.
- Ordering for kids? Stick with Classic. Bites, a Classic mini fillet or a single piece of chicken are much safer than anything Sizzler.
- If you like heat, go for Sizzler wings. Still too tame? Try Spicy Dipped (below) or the peri peri hot options.
- Feeding a group? Most buckets already mix Classic pieces with Sizzler wings, so both camps are covered. Our bucket planner helps you pick the right size.
- Coming from KFC? Classic sits roughly where KFC Original does, and Sizzler is closer to a Zinger. They aren’t identical, but it’s a fair starting point. See Dixy vs KFC for the full comparison.
Spicy Dipped, BBQ and peri peri: how they compare
You’ll see these on the same menus, but they aren’t coatings in their own right. Spicy Dipped, sold at branches such as Alum Rock in Birmingham, takes Sizzler chicken and dips it in a spicy sauce after frying, so it’s hotter than plain Sizzler. BBQ wings are Sizzler wings in a smoky BBQ sauce, which takes the edge off the heat a little. Grilled peri peri skips the fryer and the coating completely. Our peri peri menu guide covers that side of the menu.
Common questions
Is Dixy Sizzler spicy?
Yes. Menus describe it as Dixy’s spicy coating, and it’s quite hot, so it’s not the best pick for kids or anyone who avoids spice.
What does Dixy’s Classic Recipe taste like?
A seasoned, savoury crispy coating with no real heat. It’s the original Dixy coating and the one used on chicken pieces.
Can I get Sizzler chicken on the bone?
Not at the branches we checked. On-the-bone pieces are Classic Recipe only. Sizzler is used for wings, fillets and, at many shops, strips and bites.
Are Sizzler wings and spicy wings the same?
At most branches, yes. Menus use “spicy wings” and “Sizzler wings” for the same item in box meals and buckets.
Is Sizzler chicken halal?
Dixy describes all its chicken as halal, whatever the coating. Certification is handled branch by branch, so see our halal guide and check the certificate at your local shop if it matters to you.
Can I mix Classic and Sizzler in a bucket?
Most buckets already do, with Classic pieces alongside Sizzler wings. Where a bucket includes burgers, branches usually let you choose Classic or Sizzler for each one.
Coatings, recipes and prices vary from shop to shop, so your local Dixy may do things a little differently. If yours does, or you spot a price that’s out of date, let us know and we’ll update this page.
